About Sorrento

Family owned since 1944

We started as a lumber company on the river. Today we run eight ready-mix plants, a mobile batch plant, and a lumber yard and hardware store in Sorrento.

Our story

A lumber yard that grew into a ready-mix specialist

Frank and Sammie Melancon founded Sorrento Lumber in 1944 to supply the building needs of their small town. The yard became a fixture in the community, known for friendly service and for helping neighbors build.

Ready-mix came later, and today it’s most of what we do: eight plants from Zachary to Wallace and a mobile batch plant for the biggest jobs. We still run the lumber yard and hardware store on Airline Highway, we have great respect for the way we started, and four generations later we’re still family owned.

After the 2016 flood, Sorrento’s mayor named reopening Sorrento Lumber critical to the town’s recovery (The Advocate).
